Evolution is not Science Trick
Creationists say: "Evolution is not science. Science has to be repeatable, observable and measurable. Evolution is none of these things we call the scientific method."
This is a common argument against evolutionary theory, and there are strong, well-established scientific responses to each point.
-
On repeatability: Evolution is repeatable and has been observed experimentally many times. The most famous example is Richard Lenski's E. coli long-term evolution experiment, running since 1988, which has directly observed bacteria evolving new metabolic capabilities over tens of thousands of generations. Antibiotic resistance evolving in bacteria, pesticide resistance in insects, and the evolution of nylon-digesting bacteria are all documented, repeatable phenomena. Creationists sometimes concede this as "microevolution" but the distinction between micro and macro is not one biology recognizes as a scientific boundary — it's the same process over longer timescales.
-
On observability: Evolution is directly observable. We have observed speciation — new species forming — in real time, in both the lab and the wild. Hawaiian silversword plants, Italian wall lizards transplanted to a new island, and numerous insect and plant species have been observed speciating within decades. The fossil record also provides a sequential, observable record of change over time. Observation doesn't require a human watching every step, just as we observe the history of a star through light without watching it form. Also see Evolution Never Observed Trick.
-
On measurability: Evolution is extremely measurable. Allele frequencies in populations are precisely quantified. Phylogenetic trees are built from measurable DNA differences. The molecular clock uses mutation rates to calculate divergence times with testable precision. Population genetics is a deeply mathematical field.
-
On the broader framing: The argument conflates "repeatable in a lab in real time" with what science actually requires. Historical sciences — geology, astronomy, forensics, cosmology — all reconstruct past events through evidence, models, and testable predictions without directly "rerunning" them. We don't re-ignite supernovae to confirm they happened. The same logical standards apply to evolution. A geologist can't repeat the formation of the Grand Canyon but can test predictions about the process rigorously.
It's also worth noting that evolution is accepted not just by biologists but by geneticists, virologists, anthropologists, and medical researchers — fields where evolutionary predictions have practical consequences.
The best response to the claim is usually to ask: which specific prediction of evolutionary theory has been tested and failed, because that's the actual standard of science — and evolution has an extraordinary track record of making and passing those tests.
What is Takes to be Scientific
"A theory is a good theory if it satisfies two requirements. It must accurately describe a large class of observations on the basis of a model that contains only a few arbitrary elements and it must make definite predictions about the results of future observations." - Stephen Hawking, A Brief History of Time.
Evolution satisfies both of these requirements and then some. It explains a huge body of data and answers a substantial number of significant questions: "Why do vestigials and atavisms exist?" For instance. It boldly predicted countless results of future observations, such as the location of Tiktaalik roseae and the discovery of hundreds of whale ancestor intermediates.
Claiming that evolution is unscientific is one of the most desperate tactics evolution deniers attempt to use. They weaponize a middle school level understanding of what science is and how it works to implant the false perception that science proves things beyond any and all doubts. It's then extrapoled that because evolution has not been "proven" beyond all doubts, it is not "science."
Evolution is not a theory in crisis. It is not teetering on the verge of collapse. It has not failed as a scientific explanation. There is evidence for evolution, gobs and gobs of it. It is not just speculation or a faith choice or an assumption or a religion. It is a productive framework for lots of biological research, and it has amazing explanatory power. There is no conspiracy to hide the truth about the failure of evolution. There has really been no failure of evolution as a scientific theory. It works, and it works well.
Evolution itself is not flawed or without evidence. Please don't be duped into thinking that somehow evolution itself is a failure. Please don't idolize your own ability to reason.
How ironic
Isn't it ironic that a creationist would claim that Evolution is unscientific. Creationism isn't scientific in any way whatsoever. If they were to apply the same standard to themselves, they would see how illegitimate creationism is.
It is interesting that they seem to hold the scientific method in good regard. Or do they?
Perhaps they are only interested in showing that science is not internally consistent. Sort of like when Christians claim that God loves everyone, the non-Christians point out all the places where the bible has a story about God acting in an unloving manner. You don't have to believe the bible in order to show that it is internally inconsistent.
This latter would help explain why their concept of science is so wrong. I suspect for most creationists we can go further; They don't actually understand science at all. They argue only as a parrot of what the apologists say, without really grasping the meaning of the phrases they repeat.
Scientific Validation
there is no valid, scientific way to measure the validity of evolution.
That is simply not true, but it is a story that the Christian apologists like to spread for mendacious reasons.
The founding principle of science is that every conclusion must be made on evidence anyone and everyone can observe. It is not good enough to simply declare "I know what happened" but you have to produce objective evidence that anyone else can inspect.
There are many sciences that can not run "experiments" and they are still valid sciences. Geology: nobody has ever built a mountain in the lab. Oceanography, meteorology, cosmology, etc. Those are valid sciences that are based on actual measured observations.
Evolution is based on actual observations of layers of rock. Each layer contains fossils of life, and the kinds of life in each layer are specific to that layer. Cambrian life is always found only with other Cambrian life. The consistency of the life in a given layer is remarkable and that same pattern is found all over the earth.
This is not just somebody making something up. There are literally millions of fossils carefully archived in museums and you can go see them if you wish. You can also go to where they were dug up, and verify that there are more of the same there.
A scientifically valid theory must be falsifiable, and evolution is no exception: if non-Cambrian life ever showed up in a rock layer that otherwise held Cambrian life, that would show the theory to be false. But that has NEVER happened. If a rabbit showed up Jurassic rock, then evolution would be false, but there is no case of that. This is valid science.
Anyone who has gone and actually looked at the evidence comes away convinced that evolution MUST be true.
And yet, unlike cosmology and geology, evolution has been demonstrated in the lab. We can show that genetic change can happen at a given rate over a period of years. Naturally, such an experiment can only be dozens of years, so the amount of change in a dozen years is much smaller than a million years, but the rate found is suitable to explain the change over millions of years.
The question that remains: who told you that there was no way to measure the validity of evolution? Who told you this? And why? What were their motives? There is a group of people who feel that their cherished ideas are threatened by the idea that animals evolved slowly over long periods of time. So they literally spread lies and misinformation. Hate to say it, but it is Christian apologists who spread these lies. All of the web sites supporting this point of view are supported by fundamentalist Christian organizations (even though sometimes they try to hide this fact).
So -- where were you told that evolution could not be scientifically validated?
